It may sound like a hoax but science proves it. You can repair and build new connections, or “rewire”, your brain. There are several ways to do this. One method that has been helpful to me is positive affirmations. This article focuses on the science behind rewiring your brain, and why affirmations can help you overcome depressive and anxious thoughts. If you’ve experienced negative thoughts stuck on repeat like a broken record, you’ll love affirmations because they’re a way to change the station to something that serves you better. If you have to listen to a song on repeat, it should at least be a good song, am I right?
The dictionary defines affirmations as “the action or process of affirming something or being affirmed” or “emotional support or encouragement”. Positive affirmations are just what they sound like, statements that affirm, support, and encourage what you want to believe and how you want to feel. They are not instant fixes. They are a tool for redirecting negative thoughts and for rewiring the brain to choose negative thoughts less often. If used often, these simple statements can change the way you think, which is a big deal. We’ll get into why later.
How do affirmations rewire your brain?
How Do Affirmations Rewire Your Brain?
Affirmations work because of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to heal damaged neuropathways and create new ones. It’s how you continue to learn new things, develop new habits, and break old habits. The brain takes in sensory input and uses it to reinforce, break down, or build new neuropathways. But, it has a hard time knowing what is reality and what is imagination. When it comes to your “mental station” that confusion can be a good or a bad thing. It’s bad when the brain takes depressive thoughts like “I’m worthless” as fact and puts them on repeat. But it’s also why affirmations work. The brain takes any input it receives often as fact. If it always hears “I am a badass that’s capable of amazing things” it believes that.

Why You Should Use Affirmations to Rewire Your Brain
If you’re happy most of the time and don’t have a broken record of limiting beliefs, depressive thoughts, and/or anxious worries playing in your head, I guess you can skip them. But if that broken record soundtrack is all too familiar, affirmations can help you change the way you think. You can redirect negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones.Over time, this builds new neuropathways in your brain and the negative thoughts become less frequent. Your brain starts to automatically think more positively. It starts to believe the affirmations. When you believe something, your actions follow. When you act on a belief, you manifest it into reality. Affirmations are one of the nine simple habits that change your life. What do you have to lose? Your limiting beliefs and a mindset that’s making you miserable, that’s what!
